Driving sustainable emerging markets programs

Kap Tower Partners LLC got its start when founders Amani M'Bale and Anne Craib were leading separate but inter-linked projects in Uganda. Their projects both aimed to spread cost-effective access to mobile money and impactful digital financial services to under-served populations in a manner that was commercially viable for service providers while also being accessible for very low income consumers.

Achievements

Through their joint efforts, MTN- the largest mobile network in Uganda - installed a mobile tower in Kapchorwa, a rural agricultural area in the east of the country where the predominant cash crop is coffee.

The project achieved multiple goals, including:

  • Allowing MTN to make a profit on a deep rural tower by de-risking the initial investment with a donor loss guarantee;
  • Bringing connectivity to mountain villages that had not previously had either voice or internet access; and
  • Driving access to and usage of badly needed financial services, including a means to save income for the off-season and other needs including school fees.

"Amani and Anne helped Kyagalanyi understand the financial needs of our farmers at a deeper level. Facilitating the installation of a mobile cell tower in Kapchorwa was significant for the community. The tower...allows farmers to access market prices and communicate with us about the sale of coffee."

Anneke Fermont, Regional Sustainability Manager, Kyagalanyi Coffee
